The centre of Australia is a vast, flat land, with relief offered by occasional water holes, or billabongs, as Ana discovered on her recent travels. The tourism board would hate me for saying this, but it's very rare indeed to be able to experience this beautiful place without being swarmed by the scourge of outback Australia, flies. Who knows why one day they're trying to eat your face off, the next day they're nowhere to be seen - but you make the most of these rare, serene moments.
